Poll: Volunteering Promotes Better Overall Health

In a new poll of 4,500 Americans, 84% said they agree that volunteering can promote better physical health, and 95% reported that it may have emotional benefits, as well.

The poll, released by United Healthcare and VolunteerMatch, a national nonprofit group, 68% of those polled said volunteering helped them to feel physically healthier, and volunteers tended to have better attitudes at work and experience less anxiety and stress than non-volunteers.

And in the wake of a recession and a housing crisis, perhaps physical and mental benefits from volunteering are exactly what this country needs.

Perhaps endorphins, the feel-good chemicals our body releases when we’re, say, doing good things for others, are the cause of feeling healthier? What are your thoughts? Has volunteering helped you feel physically and mentally better?
